Health Care Policy Advisor: Can Instantly Erase Uninsured Number

by Ethan Calvin

The president and CEO of the National Center for Policy Analysis, John C. Goodman, says the title is indeed misleading, but insists that is can be done. How would he accomplish instantly erasing the number of uninsured Americans?

Goodman says, "The next president of the United States should sign an executive order requiring the Census Bureau to cease and desist from describing any American, even illegal aliens, as uninsured." Goodman is an advisor to John McCain, as well.

Goodman's argument is that the Census Bureau would compile more accurate data by revealing where Americans get funds from when they need health care. This would possible include help financially from the government, friends, family, and free hospital care.

As reported by the Dallas Morning News, Goodman adds that the only Americans that are truly uninsured are the ones who are denied all health care. He argues that all who can gain access to an emergency room, which would include almost everyone, have health insurance.

The Center for Public Priorities representative, Eva Deluna, disagrees:"[Access to an emergency room] is not the same thing as having health insurance. People without insurance are less likely to seek care, and when they do, the cost to the health system is greater." At least Goodman has revealed an interesting analysis of the statistics that show the uninsured American numbers.
